Malawi Maternity Project

The Malawi Maternity Project has ben a rousing success. Our goal was to collect 30 washcloths, bars of soap, baby hats, and baby blankets by May 5th. That number would be enough to provide gifts for women choosing to deliver babies at the medical center in Makapwa for one month. The gifts have been a successful incentive for women to come to the center for childbirth, which is a much safer option than home delivery. The need for these kits came to our attention through Alicia Mosher, who along with her husband, Craig, served as our short-term missionaries to Malawi in the fall of 2011. Alicia worked in the maternity ward in Makapwa. Congratulations and thank you to the many people who helped make this project successful.

The Republic of Malawi

is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozembique to the east, west and south.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. The countryside of Malawi consists of small villages with clay and mud huts. These villages are accessed on unpaved roads. The poor economic situation is atributed to the absence of minerals, the lack of a seaport, limited educational opportunities, and the traditional focus on plantation farming.

The work of Seventh Day Baptists in Makapqwa, Malawi is focused on edication and medicine. There is a school there as well as a clinic for women and a doctor's post for first aid.

Courageous

On Friday, April 20 nearly 100 people from our church and the community gathered to enjoy a picnic. There were plenty of hot dogs, ham burghers, beans, chips and ice crea. The children also enjoyed a "bouncy bounce" castle, snow cones, andppcorn.

At 6:30 we watched a showing of the movie Courageous.

A new adult Bible study is beginning on Monday, May 7 and on Wednesday, May 9. It is based on the movie and will meet for eight weeks.
